Radical Dharma: How To Use Our Mindfulness Practices To Change Ourselves and The World


In an effort to reduce financial barriers, Circle Yoga (who is hosting my workshop) is offering Sliding Scale Pricing on select Circle Yoga programs. The Reduced Rate is for those experiencing financial hardship, the Standard Rate is our usual fee that covers costs including teacher pay, and the Pay It Forward Rate helps cover fellow students who need to pay less. If you need to pay less than the Reduced Rate, partial scholarships are also available.

In this class we will read together and contemplate the teachings found in the book Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love, and Liberation by Rev. angel Kyoto williams (Sensei), Lama Rod Owens, and Jasmine Syedullah.

We will use the readings from the book, guided meditations, and small and large group conversations to learn and practice new ways to transform and heal ourselves and our world.

"What is required is a new Dharma, a radical Dharma that deconstructs rather than amplifies the systems of suffering, that starves rather than fertilizes the soil of the conditions that the deep roots of societal suffering grow in. A new Dharma is one that insists we investigate not only the unsatisfactoriness of our own minds but also prepares us for the discomfort of confronting the obscurations of the society we are individual expressions of." This series includes 5 one-hour virtual classes, and it is limited to 20 students. Sessions will not be recorded.

BIO

Annie Mahon (she, they) is a white, Armenian-American, ordained cis-gendered woman practicing in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. She has been studying in this Zen tradition - through retreats with Thich Nhat Hanh and many other teachers - since the 1990’s. She is also the founder of Circle Yoga Cooperative (2003),  DC Community Yoga and DC Yoga Week (2005), the Pink House Foundation (2010)—a grant-making organization supporting the development political and social capital for marginalized groups in the United States, moving land, wealth, and power to historically oppressed groups, Opening Heart Mindfulness Community (2014), and most recently Making-Visble (2018), an ongoing webinar series grounded in mindfulness and led by those most impacted by issues of social injustice, internal biases.

Her book about mindful eating, Things I Did When I Was Hangry: Navigating a Peaceful Relationship with Food was published by Parallax Press in 2015.

Annie holds masters degrees in both Computer Science, from the University of Michigan, and Religious Studies from Howard University. She studied yoga with Suzie Hurley at Willow Street Yoga Center in 2004, and she was one of the country’s first certified Children’s Yoga teachers. In addition, she is a certified Focusing professional, Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT). Trauma-informed Clinical PracticeNonviolent Communication (NVC), and practices many other modalities.
